Daughter of the Blood - by Anne Bishop "Black Jewel Trilogy"

Powerful.  My one word review. However, my more in-depth thoughts are as follows.
Initially, I thought...uh oh, what have I gotten myself into.  First there were rats eating some guy’s balls, and a couple of pages later, we’re talking about “Rings of Obedience” wrapped around some poor guy’s member as some form of control/punishment.  I’m thinking I’ve taken a wrong turn down the fictional alleyway and ran smack into some bdsm story. Any more of this and I’m just about to give up. But wait, before you know it Anne Bishop is weaving an intriguing world full of corruption, lust and power.

The story takes place in a matriarchal society where certain members are born with power (referred to as The Blood) which is represented by a jewel. This society is also a caste system delineated by power as represented by the colour of the jewel worn.  The darker the jewel, the more power a person has; with the Black Jewel being the most powerful of them all. It is the black, the darkness, that is worshiped and not the light as is illustrated in many other stories. However, the darkness is not necessarily evil as exemplified by the character Lucivar in the following passage when talking to another about why they are treated with such cruelty.

"Because they have no honor. Because they don't remember what it means to be Blood. The High Priestess of Hayll's influence is a plague that has been spreading across the Realm for centuries, slowly consuming every Territory it touches." "Maybe the landens are right, then. Maybe the Blood are evil." Lucivar continued stroking the man's forehead and temples. "No. We are what we are. Nothing more, nothing less. There is good and evil among every kind of people. It's the evil among us who rule now."

Now, it’s very hard to give a more detailed review without spoilers.  So please be aware, from this point on **SPOILER ALERT**.  Although, I will still keep it fairly loose.

In the mix are obvious religious doctrines where one of the realms is called Hell, where the living dead reside. Those who are of the Blood do not actually die. The head of this realm is Saetan and not a coincidence that it is similar to Satan and his sons Daemon and Lucivar also analogous to Demon and Lucifer.

As a result of the corruption and hunger for power of Hayll’s High Priestess, these sons were separated from their father and sent to serve the women of the Blood as whores.  Sex is used as a weapon by the women to dominate the men, and Daemon although subjugated by the corrupt women of the ruling class, is still able use their sexual desires against them by being the ultimate seducer and whore, flaming their lust for him.  He is powerful in his own right, as he has the power of the Black Jewel but of course he is kept on a leash by the Ring of Obedience and through leverage of his brother’s life.  His subjugation fuels his rage making him more cruel and sadistic. Known in the story as The Sadist, he is the ultimate anti-hero who is redeemed in the end.

A seer prophesised, “Now the Queen is coming. It may take decades, even centuries, but she is coming...The living myth...Dreams made flesh.” When she arrives, she is but a child although the most awe provoked amount of power in the history of the Blood. This child Jaenelle is a dichotomy of knowledge and innocence; power and purity.  Immediately, when she appears in the story, you know that she is the destined Queen in the prophesy.  However, she is shrouded in secret; the source of her hatred and sadness is a mystery to be solved.

Ultimately, it is the cruelty and grief that the characters have endured that makes them who they are, and in some instances, is what saves them as well.  Jaenelle was forced to withdraw into herself, and there she found the source of her power. The abuser (which I will not name) is to be pitied, as well as hated, because despite his evil you can empathise with the horror that he also had to endure.  Daemon was able to save Jaenelle’s life in the end, because he is the ultimate seducer, honed by his years of servitude, and there’s the irony.

This is a well crafted story, strongly woven with a mind boggling cast of characters and interrelationships. The Daughter of the Blood is the first of a trilogy of books.  Although, Anne Bishop has written a prequel to this book, The Invisible Ring. I will however, move on to the second book, Heir to Shadows, as the first one leaves all the characters on a bit of a cliff hanger.

Moolto.com

It’s official. I am back in the world of technicolour and leaving behind the world of texti-no-colour. Well, perhaps not totally. There is an advantage of working on a text based SL client; it means that I am not so easily distracted by the shopping and the freebies, and I can concentrate on people instead.

There is good news to announce. I am officially working for Moolto.com as their Staff Writer for MORE Magazine, amongst other things.  Moolto.com is a social networking site just for Second Life avatars.  You can post classifieds; make connections with people; enter contests and so much more. I’m super excited about it.
You can check out my article in the December issue of MORE Magazine, http://issuu.com/moolto-maxesloon/docs/december2010.

I wish everyone and their family a well deserved break, and Merry Christmas everyone!

A Home for all Second Life Magazines

Lifted this from the Second Life Forum:

If you're a magazine publisher, make your way to Morning Wood and add your publication.  I love the idea of being able to go to one place and read all my favourite publications and maybe discover some new ones.

Are you in need of a Copy Editor, and you don't even know it?

A copy editor is a person who edits a manuscript or article for publication, looking for errors in style, punctuation and grammar.  Skimping on this to save either time or money only hinders the professional reputation of any publication.  I see obvious and very avoidable grammatical errors all the time in great publications. I say that these publications are great, because a great deal of work and dedication has been exerted to take them from the initial idea to publication for readers' consumption.

Here are some examples of which I speak:

This sentence should have read, "They have dedicated their time, knowledge..."  Then, further on it should also have read, "Radar Magazine was created to be a part of the pulse..."  Otherwise, they are just slicing "apart" the pulse.  Further, you would want to showcase, "people's creations" as opposed to the manufacturing of people, which is "people creations".

This one is from the editor:

I think what was meant here was, "Welcome back, we're happy that newcomers have joined us, ..."

Here we have a problem with plurals.  When you follow "two" models, you need to pluralize the word model.
Again, the same mistake between "there" and "their" has been repeated in the magazine in the title of this article.

I am not in any way criticizing this magazine, but using it as an example of something that I see in many magazines throughout the grid.  Radar Magazine has many good qualities, including great layout and interesting articles.  However, when so much obvious work has been placed into this project, it is disappointing that such small and avoidable mistakes are often overlooked.

NaNoWrimo Crash & Burn

We are now half way into the month of November and I have run out of steam. What I have learnt from this run? I cannot turn off my internal editor (certainly something that I will work on.)
I'm a planner, and running by the seat of my pants is something I don't do well.  More plotting needed for my next attempt at NaNoWriMo.

Scrivener is actually an interesting writing tool; excellent for planning, keeping up with your word count, but not good for editing.  I suggest you do your fine editing in Microsoft Word.
At the end of the day, it was not a waste because what I have written now can be added to the other five chapters that I have written earlier this year.  I do intend to go back and do more when the muse inspires me again.

Adding a NaNoWriMo Widget to Blogger

I had some problems with this myself. Once I figured it out, it seems obvious, but from the instructions on the NaNoWrimo website in regards to the widgets, it was a little confusing. Here's how to add your NaNoWriMo widget to your blogger account:

1. Go to your Dashboard.

2. Select Design.

3. Select Add a Gadget.

4. In the list of Gadgets, select HTML/JavaScript

5. Give your Widget a Title

6. In Contents, cut and paste the widget from the widget place on the NaNoWriMo website. Please be sure to log into your account first as this way your personal ID number is showing on the HTML script that you are copying.

Voila!!!

NaNoWriMo is Here: Yay! (Gulp)

That's right, 50,000 words written in 30 days.  That's the pledge we Nano participants have taken on.  I'm putting my hat for I'm attempting this year's WriMo, having said on previous years that I would do it if ever I had the time.  Well, I have the time now and there are no more excuses.  Am I scared?  You bet. What's my genre? Fanstasy Fiction.  What's the plan? A bit each day.
